Bachelors Degree Vs Associates Degree - Which is the Right Choice?

You may be thinking about attending a local community college to earn an associate degree. The fact is that, although an associate degree is an accomplishment, a bachelor degree is a more formal, prestigious college degree to attain. For some careers, however, there are more opportunities for an associate degree graduate with some work experience rather than a bachelor degree graduate with no work experience.

Associate Degree

An associate degree is basically a two year program equivalent to the first two years in a bachelor's program. Getting an associates can give you the basic skills to increase your ability to write, speak, and process mathematical functions. Associate graduates have the opportunity to work in the field and greatly boost their.

The other side of stopping your education at the associate level is that you do not learn the valuable skills that are focused on your career path. The more advanced college courses are only available only to bachelor level students, and they are a required part of some job career paths to fully understand the industry.

Bachelor Degree

Graduating with a bachelor's requires a high time and study investment and it is more difficult to attain than a just an associates. It's a more prestigious degree and it commands a better salary due to advanced skills required to achieve. A standard college graduate will have a much more diverse variety of college courses available to them that gives them a better, well rounded college education.

A bachelor degree will help you command a better salary, but it will also take much more time to graduate especially if you are working. It's also important to get some hands-on, job experience to help you move quickly into a great career once you graduate.

Online Nursing Degrees - The Right Choice For You?

Online nursing degrees are growing in popularity as more people rush to enter the lucrative, highly in-demand field of nursing.

Online degrees offer some wonderful advantages. You can take classes at whatever time of day is convenient for you. You can work full-time and still earn a salary while getting your degree. You can bring your laptop with you and study and send in homework assignments while you are on the bus or subway, at the beach, or at the coffeeshop. You don't have to spend time and gasoline driving to a college campus, looking for parking, walking half a mile to your building, walking back....
However, online nursing degrees do have their limitations.

First of all, there is currently only one online program in the country that we know of - the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh - that allows a person with no healthcare degree or certificate to get their nursing degree. They take a limited number of students, they require you to have a previous bachelor's degree, you must have completed a number of science and other prerequisites, and they grant an accelerated second bachelor's degree. Most of the program is online, but you must go to the campus in Oshkosh several times, AND not every state offers the clinicals that are required for the program.

What is much more common are programs that allow an LPN or a paramedic to take a "bridge" program which allows the LPN to complete their associate degree and become a registered nurse. An example of this is Chamberlain College of Nursing. Excelsior College and many others offer these opportunities as well.

You can also, after you get your associate's degree in nursing, take online classes to get a bachelor's of science in nursing. This frequently will result in a higher salary, and also, if you want to progress into managerial positions, you generally need at least a BSN.

There are online nursing degree programs which grant master's degrees in nursing as well.
Also, you can take many of your prerequisites online - English, psychology, nutrition, etc. You need to have those completed before you are accepted into an LPN to RN bridge program.

For information and links to a bunch of great online nursing degree programs, click here: http://nursingschoolprograms.com/online-nursing-degree-programs

IMPORTANT NOTE: Not every state accepts these online nursing programs. For example Florida does not recognize Excelsiors paramedic to lpn program, so if you took that program, you would not be able to sit for the NCLEX-RN program in Florida. You must check with your state board of nursing before you sign up with the online program, because you do not want to spend all that time and money and find out that you are not eligible to sit for the NCLEX, which is the test that you must pass in order to be licensed as a nurse.

Nursing Students - Why A Non-Traditional Degree Is Your Best Bet Right Now

The nationwide nursing shortage has created an army of prospective nursing students ready, eager and willing to get a nursing degree and enter the ranks of registered nurses.

The problem? The dreaded, infamous nursing school waiting lists. Traditional bachelor's degree of science in nursing programs are so in demand right now that just about every school is forced to turn away dozens, if not hundreds, of qualified students at every application cycle.

By qualified, we mean students with good grades, no criminal background, good references.

Students may reapply three or four times before they get in, or they may never get in to their four-year BSN program of choice.

According to the National Association of Colleges of Nursing, U.S. nursing schools turned away 42,2866 qualified applicants from bachelor's degree programs and graduate schools in 2006.

One solution? If you are eager to go to nursing school, you may want to consider a "career college", also known in some places as vocational schools or technical schools or degree schools. Note: not all vocational or technical schools are private, and the public schools will likely have long waiting lists, because they are cheaper.

Career colleges are private, for-profit schools that offer degrees in areas like registered nursing, practical nursing, computer technology, fire sciences technology, law enforcement, and other specific career-oriented programs. The liberal arts courses that they offer are the ones that are required to complete those degrees.

Career colleges generally cost considerably more than community colleges and state universities, but they have a huge advantage: you will get in much faster, and get your degree much faster, possibly in as little as two years.

Career colleges are businesses; therefore, they want to help you to succeed, because a high passing rate for their students makes them more attractive to prospective students.

They will generally offer an Associate's Degree in nursing rather than a Bachelor's of Science degree in nursing. An associates is technically a two year degree, although there are about a year's worth of prerequisite courses that must be taken before starting an ADN program. Some career colleges, though, offer those classes in a much faster format, which helps you graduate faster. They do this by offering each prerequisite class in a format where, instead of taking each prerequisite class for a couple of hours twice a week for a semester, classes are taken all day, five days a week, for a month.

Once you get an Associate's Degree in Nursing and pass the NCLEX-Rn, you will be a registered nurse. it is easy to take an RN to BSN program; those programs do not have long waiting lists. The trick is getting your RN degree in the first place.

Although a career college will cost you more, it may shorten your wait to get into nursing school so much that it turns out to be worth it.

It is important to check with your State Board of Nursing to make sure that your nursing school program is accredited. It's not a bad idea to make sure the program has already graduated AT LEAST one class of nurses, preferably several. But rest assured, career colleges are a legitimate option for frustrated wannabe nursing students who are waiting to start their dream career and don't want to have to wait any longer.

Associate Degrees In Nursing Or Criminal Justice Gets You Right To Work, Earning A Great Salary

It's true that most people recognize that college is an important component of getting a good job, especially today. But the fact of the matter is, not everyone has the desire or time to go to school for four years before they begin to work. In fact, a lot of people need to get to work sooner rather than later, especially if they are raising a family.

If you're one of these students and know that you need to go to school, but you also know a bachelor's degree isn't the right tool for you right now, you can think about getting an associate's degree. The associate's degree has a couple of distinct advantages that a bachelor's degree doesn't offer. With an associate's degree in several fields, you are ready to get right to work in a good paying job, because your associate degree has prepared you to get right to work, in as little as two years.

One field that is a great example of this "get to work" maxim is an associate degree in nursing. An associate degree in nursing will allow a student to graduate with degree in nursing after just two short years. Everyone knows that nursing is a real up and coming field, especially with the new health reforms and an aging population that needs more medical care than ever.

The great news about an associate in nursing is that you will graduate ready to take the national Licensure examination. You will graduate ready and prepared to take your licensing exams right away. It's very likely that you will be able to get hired right after graduation, or even before, because the demand for nurses is so high right now.

Nursing jobs are also among the most well paid jobs for two year degrees. That's because the growth rate in the field is scheduled to be much faster than average in comparison to other work fields. The government says that the field is going to grow so much because tens of thousands of new jobs are being developed, in addition to the tens of thousands of nurses who are scheduled to retire in the next decade. All of those jobs will need to be filled.

Another great example of an associate degree that will help you get right to work is an associate degree in criminal justice. This degree will enable a student to be prepared to apply for a job in the field of law enforcement at a number of levels. One of the most popular jobs that people seek with a criminal justice degree is that of a local law enforcement officer.

In fact, some associate programs in criminal justice are coupled with police academies at community colleges. In these programs, students get excellent classroom instruction in the background of law enforcement and criminal justice. After they graduate with their associate degree in criminal justice, they are well prepared to enter a police academy setting. In fact, many law enforcement agencies are now requiring their applicants to hold an associate degree as a minimum, and many offer tuition assistance to approved new hires.

Finding the Right Degree for a Job in Nursing

One of the few professions that are always going to need more bodies is nursing. As a matter of fact, with the right nursing degree under your belt, you have the opportunity to move to almost any area and find work right away. It is important for you to understand, however, the availability of work is going to be given to those who have the right degree. That is why it is important for you to make sure that you understand how to look for a college that will give you the education necessary to keep you at the top of the list. Here are some items that you should look for.

Perhaps one of the most important things to consider when you're going to get a nursing degree is that you must be using an accredited school. The reason why this is important is because you would want to make sure that any credit you got from going to college follows you should you happen to try to extend your education. Additionally, degrees from an accredited college are one of the first things that an employer is going to look for when they are reviewing your resume. It may seem simplistic, but the college that you choose can make a large difference in how attractive you are to a hospital or doctor.

There are also a number of different available degrees when you are getting your nursing education. One of the more popular is the associate degree in nursing, as this can take approximately one year for you to complete. Most nurses start out with this one-year education and then continued to increase on it in order to better their status at the workplace. From the associate degree in nursing, you can go to a bachelor degree, Master's degree or even get your doctorate. It is important to understand, a certain level of education is going to be necessary in order for you to either become an RN or an LPN.

Have you given any consideration to using an online college? If you haven't, this is really something that you should not overlook. Being able to take some or perhaps all of your classes online is very convenient as it is something that you can do on your own time. Many people that are already working in nursing are using an online college in order to further their education without having to take a leave of absence from work.

One final thing that you need to consider is going to be the tuition. There's no doubt about the fact that it can get quite expensive for you to continue your education in this way. You do have the option, however, in some cases of being able to work for an institution that is willing to pay off your student loans after you have worked for them continuously for one year. It is best to have something like this set up in advance, if at all possible to make sure that it is going to work well for you.
